TLDR: 3AM’s new single, Life’s hard lemonade off our upcoming album Life’s Hard. All earnings pledged AND MATCHED to the National Homelessness Law Center. Housing is a human right, #HousingNotHandcuffs
Friends, we are very excited about our single Life’s hard lemonade off of our second LP Life’s Hard (late 2021). I want to talk a little about this song. The lyrics are 90% verbatim from a conversation I had with two strangers while walking my dog. That conversation stuck with me. It was a funny and unexpected interaction with an odd guy and his friend.
But also it was troubling. A large part of the conversation dealt with housing insecurity, and it put in contrast the inequality access to affordable housing. This anecdote is representative of a systemic challenge facing the U.S., where there is a shortage of 6.8 million affordable rental homes for low-income renters.
I won’t pretend to be an expert, it is a complicated problem facing us and our communities. What I do know is I care about the issue and we as 3AM and individuals want to do something. We are pledging all income from our single Life’s hard lemonade for donation to the National Homelessness Law Center.
NHLC is a good mix of local direct action, and national efforts to enact policy and law that benefits and protects the homeless and housing insecure. What sold me was their supporting efforts in Martin v City of Boise, a case which as of 2019 rules that cities cannot enforce anti-camping ordinance when the city has not provided adequate shelter beds. Dismantling camps, shuttling people around and out of sight, and criminalizing homelessness is not the way out of this crisis.
I realize as 3AM we don’t have a huge reach, but this effort is a start and hopefully a place to build from. All income on Life’s hard lemonade, whether from streams, purchases, or donations to our paypal link (dm or check spotify), will be donated to NHLC. Further, I will MATCH all donations or chip in $200.00, whichever is highest. Thank you for your support and love, be good to your neighbors, housed or otherwise. -Hunter
lyrics
I was walking my dog home and
I met two folks I did not know
it was one of those times where you can tell
from far away that you're
gonna have a conversation.
They just bought a new fifth,
the day of the week didn't matter to him
they just bought a new fifth
and he asked me where I lived
Must have given off
the wrong impression
when I said that it sounds like fun
to get fucked up
so I fucked up
and made a friend
that I didn't want
so I lied about
the location of my house
its not on principle
and I'm not proud
I just don't trust anyone
Then he asked me:
what are you doing on the 28th?
Like were such great friends
making me pretend
like we haven't just met
sorry busy, I gotta work late
And so we talked about,
the cost of living,
and its obvious now that
the fifth was for forgetting
talked about,
the cost of living,
and its obvious now that
the fifth was for forgetting
rent's going up in the trailer park
life's hard life's hard life's hard
